The Edges B Team, following close contests in the pre-season, have stormed out of the gate to take their first three regular season games - including a come-from-behind (they it that way) overtime victory, and a defensive gem shut-out. “The shut-out was great,” commented Assistant Captain, Simon Litherland, “but let’s face facts, we prefer the come-from-behind position more.”
In a weekend game against rival Crease Greasers, the Edges, already on the power-play, pulled veteran goalie, Chris “Chip” Bailey with two minutes left in the third, and down 3-2 for another extra attacker. At first the strategy seemed to backfire as the Greasers stormed the Edges zone, but some fancy foot-work by Litherland (a dance major in university) saved a goal, and with 20 seconds left in regulation, forward Darrell Oakford tied the game, sending the game into overtime. Oakford played the hero again, and won the game with 4 seconds remaining in overtime and with the Edges, again, on the power-play. “They clearly have some anger management issues and penalties brought them to their knees,” said Oakford. “For the Edges, it’s a lot easier to get us to our knees,” winked Oakford as he headed to the showers following the post-game interviews.
The Bees continued their stellar early play the very next day by blanking the Bruisers, 4-0. It was the Bees second victory against the struggling Bruisers, who nevertheless, did not give up at any time in the contest. “They are a good team, and every goalie knows you need a little luck on your side to come out of a game like that without giving up a goal,” said Bailey at the post-game news conference. “I am a little upset I didn’t get a point in that game though,” joked Bailey who has two assists already in five games and is tied for 6th place in scoring in this young season.
The player of the game, however, was Anthony “Big Daddy” Winsor, who scored a hat-trick in the victory and leads the team in goals with 6, and points with 9 in just 5 games. “He’s my hero,” rookie Bam Bam Loke was overheard exclaiming to the team psychologist, Dr. Douglas Cave. Loke was later taken into care.
Next up for the Bees are the dreaded Slant Six Games on Saturday, October 24 with a game time of 10 pm at the UBC Thunderbird Arena. Tickets are still available, but with the team doing so well early on, tickets are expected to go swiftly.
