The Vancouver Cutting Edges made a splash at the 10th Annual Chelsea Challenge in New York recently, going 3-0 in the round-robin portion of the B Pool, and only conceding a single goal in three games. However, when the first place Edges took to the ice in the quarterfinals against the fourth place Green Gothams (NYC), they had a hard lesson to learn.
“I think we may have taken them lightly,” said veteran Dan Gawthrop. “Perhaps too much talk about a final appearance with Toronto, and not enough concern about getting there first,” confessed goalie Chip Bailey. “We seem to lack a certain energy level on a Sunday morning, and they most certainly did not,”
When the smoke had cleared, the Edges went down to defeat 4-0, and the Green Gothams went on to win the B Pool versus Toronto.
“We can be proud at how well we did, and how we surprised people here, but we left with unfinished business and a hard lesson to learn – but learn it we did,” said Team Captain Simon Litherland. “We’ll be back, and more determined than ever.”
The Edges iced quite an international team with the team being made up of veteran and new Vancouver players with add-on players from the Chicago Gay Hockey team, a forward from New York City and a centre-man from England. “Who would have ever thought that Vancouver and Chicago could not only get along, but also accomplish so much – we were unstoppable in the round-robin, now next time, we bring that to the play-off round too,” finished Edges forward Jason Wu. “And it was great to meet and bond with Andrew, David and Tony from Chicago. They are welcome on our team, any day!”
